"Lost Prairie" speaks of nature and the west and the beauty of the wild spaces. The buffalo in the sky represent that spirit. This was a wild herd of bison that I was able to get very close to, and while photographing them, a magnificent thunderstorm rolled in, sounding like the thunder of a thousand buffalo running across the sky. I took that inspiration with me and found a beautiful prairie just north of Flagstaff, Arizona on public land that seemed just right to fulfill the vision.

"Lost Prairie" is a composite photograph that I made from 3 of my own images.

Welcome! My name is Dr.Sandra Byland, and I have been a professional award-winning artist for over 40 years. I am a Colored Pencil Artist, and have been working in Colored Pencil for nearly 4 decades. It is my primary medium and the one for which I am known. But I also love graphite pencil and pastel - and occasionally acrylic! My work is highly detailed, and I have created a technique in Colored Pencil that allows me to bring great detail and realism to my work. For a number of years I also worked as a Natural Science Illustrator for natural history museums, natural history associations and state parks. After 25 years as an Art Director and Graphic Designer, I am now combining a deeper level of design into my fine art drawings and...
